INTERESTED IN HELPING PRESERVE THE HISTORY OF WASHINGTON PARISH?........MEMBERSHIP DRIVE FOR 2011 UNDER WAY AT THE D.A. VARNADO STORE MUSEUM

If you are interested in having a part in preserving the history of the Washington Parish area you won't want to miss the opportunity to become a member of the Washington Area Museum Foundation's D.A. Varnado Store Museum for the calendar year 2011. Now is the time to renew your membership or become a first-time member. Students, individuals, families, clubs and organizations, and businesses can all become a vital part of this preservation effort.

The museum foundation's mission is to preserve local history and heritage and provide educational opportunities for all generations. Since its beginning the museum has offered exhibits of many types, revealing many glimpses of Washington Parish's past. It has also hosted a Smithsonian World War II exhibit, local flower shows and art exhibits, demonstrations, and educational lectures. The museum volunteers coordinate its efforts with area government officials, civic clubs, Franklinton Community Theatre, Master Gardeners, art associations, schools, history groups, the National DDay Museum, libraries, and home and garden clubs.

The century old general store/museum, located just behind the courthouse, was a hub of activity for farmers and citizens of the area beginning in the 19th century. Its rich history is a perfect place to house and display our parish's history.

By becoming a member of the Washington Area Museum Foundation's D.A. Varnado Store Museum, you will join in and help continue its efforts to:
-preserve Washington Parish history
-provide educational and cultural exhibits for all ages
-help younger generations learn about their own heritage
-promote economic development in the area as visitors from outside the parish come to see the exhibits
-promote our heritage and its connections to surrounding communities and throughout the Louisiana/Mississippi region
-have a community-minded spirit
-preserve an historic building

All proceeds from membership and donations are used to preserve artifacts, maintain the building, offer new exhibits each month and publicize the exhibits. The 2011 schedule of exhibits for each month is available at the museum or may be seen at our web site, www.varnadostoremuseum.org. A membership meeting/reception is held annually in September.

The museum is open every weekend of the month with changing monthly exhibits. In addition to memberships, you are invited to join with us and volunteer in the efforts to preserve our history by helping set up displays, making contacts, assisting with advertising, hosting, and more by contacting Director Terry Seal, 839-3279.

Memberships may be used as a gift, an honorarium, or memorial. Forms for memberships and donations may be picked up at the museum each weekend, or you may contact Vicki Knight, any board member or volunteer. (see attached) They may be mailed to: Membership, Washington Area Museum Foundation, P.O. Box 184, Franklinton, LA 70438.
