The volunteers at the Varnado Store Museum in Franklinton will display photos, items and artifacts, music, oral histories, antique Bibles, church histories and more as it offers to the visitor a glimpse of early religion in the southeastern part of Louisiana and the eastern Florida parishes.
A highlight of the exhibit will be interviews of several older citizens as they share first hand their own special memories of early churches, preachers and "going to church". The interview session will be held the last Sunday of the month, February 27, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the museum. This session, "Passing Down Memories of Early Church Life and Religion in Our Homes", will be geared to telling younger generations about the way things were. School groups and grandchildren will be especially invited to hear these accounts. Older citizens will be invited to hear and share their memories.
From riding in buggies to church on Sundays, to itinerant preachers, and baptism in local creeks and rivers, and struggling missions, the history of Washington Parish and the other Florida parishes is steeped in religion as a foundation for settlement and family life. Those who migrated to this area from the eastern states and European countries were strong in faith, and their faith influenced all aspects of life, from education to family to community.
This century-old general store/museum, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is handicapped accessible. Each month special emphasis exhibits change, and the visitor can always step back in time and view the old general store items. A list of upcoming 2005 exhibits can be seen at the web site, www.varnadostoremuseum.org. A gift shop is available.
